Points are most valuable when they serve the journey already worth taking. The temptation is to build an itinerary around an attractive redemption; the wiser approach is to decide what the trip needs, then use points where they improve it meaningfully.
Value is more than cents per point
A technically excellent redemption can still be the wrong flight. Arrival time, routing, comfort and the first day of the journey matter more than extracting a theoretical maximum from every point.
Protect the important nights
Hotel points are particularly useful at the beginning and end of a trip, where convenience and flexibility often outweigh novelty. In the middle of the journey, an independent lodge or small hotel may deliver the experience no loyalty programme can replicate.
Keep cash as an option
The best strategy compares points and cash with equal honesty. Sometimes paying for the sensible flight preserves points for a future journey where they unlock something truly exceptional.
